At Vivamus we recognise that being mentally healthy doesn’t have to mean psychological therapy or medication. There are many things that anyone can do to improve their mood, reduce stress and feel more able to tackle life’s challenges. This is equally true whether you have a diagnosable mental health condition and/or whether you simply experience the usual ups and downs in mood, energy and mojo that we all do.

In the spirit of encouraging everyone to be their best selves, Vivamus are putting together a choir in order to create a safe space and a community in which people can sing to enhance their mental health.

Psychologists don’t do anything unless there’s scientific evidence to back up their actions, and Vivamus Community Singers is no exception. When considering whether to set up this choir, I looked into the scientific literature backing up what I had a sense of already, and it’s true – there is plenty of research demonstrating how singing in a group enhances mood and improves mental health!

For example, research shows that singing in a choir:

    • Allows the sacculus (a tiny organ in the ear) to respond to the frequencies of singing which gives an immediate sense of pleasure regardless of what that singing sounds like (we love this!).
    • Releases endorphins which improve mood
    • Lowers stress
    • Increases blood to the brain which improves mental alertness, concentration and memory
    • Increases confidence
    • Widens your social circle
    • Strengthens the immune system
    • Improves social skills

We’re looking for people to come along and join us in singing for mental health. Either I or one of my colleagues (psychologists) will be present, not only to join in the singing, but also to lend a hand or an ear to anyone who might find it challenging to come along for whatever reason.
