How can CBT help me?
There is a lot of research to show that CBT is effective in treating a wide range of emotional issues and mental health problems. CBT is routinely used in the treatment of:
- stress
- depression
- anxiety and GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder)
- phobias
- panic attacks
- OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
- chronic pain
- sleep difficulties
- anger management.
The core of CBT treatment is based on the notion that it is not a situation that causes us to feel a certain way, it is our perception of the situation. The way we think affects our mood, which in turn affects the way we act. The way we act affects the way we think and feel, and as such we can get stuck in a vicious cycle. Your psychologist will work with you to help you identify your own unhelpful thinking styles and help you gain insight into how they came about. You will work together to identify ways to think and behave differently as you go forwards, helping you to take the edge of difficult emotions and allowing you to better manage them.
