What is the difference between a Psychiatrist & a Psychologist?

Ah, this is a familiar question. Put simply, a psychiatrist is a medical doctor who trains as a physician and then specialises in psychiatry. Psychiatrists prescribe medication.

Psychologists are psychologists from the start who typically complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and then specialise by completing further training in the form of a Masters Degree and/or Doctoral Degree in their area of speciality, such as Clinical Psychology or Health Psychology. Psychologists do not prescribe medication. Psychologists use talking therapy to treat mental health concerns. 

How do I know whether I need a Psychiatrist or Psychologist?

If you know you would like medication to help you with your mental health concern then an appointment with our psychiatrist would be a good place to start. If you feel strongly that you would like to start with therapy before considering medication, then an appointment with one of our psychologists or counsellors would be a good first step.

Don’t worry too much about this though. Our Psychiatrist and Psychologists are experienced and well trained so they will be able to suggest the best approach for you. Often it’s a combination of psychological therapy and medication that has the best effect for moderate and severe challenges, and our team will work closely with one another to ensure you receive a joined up approach to your care.
